Ray Bradbury, a wonderful author wrote Fahrenheit 451 in 1953. His novel was about a dystopian world where the fireman’s job was to burn books as books had been outlawed and where people spent most of their times glued to wide screen televisions attached to the walls. The citizens of this futuristic society were generally mesmerized by the screens and were constantly and consistently fed huge amounts of propaganda created by the totalitarian state.

Over the years there have been many interpretations of what Bradbury was trying to say, but one thing seems very clear: like it or not, we have reached that point. News reports are no longer non biased reporting of the day’s events but more the opinions of the particular owners of the television station you might be watching. The days of Walter Cronkite are over. Think of how the media (Public Broadcasting to Fox news and everything in-between), can report on the same story, yet you would never recognize that they were the same story.

It has been estimated again and again that 1% of the American population read only 1 book per year. It has also been said that the average American spends up to 5 hours per day sitting in front of the Television. California, the richest state is the U.S., is ranked 49th in education (Mississippi is ranked 50th).

So what in the world does this have to do with Fibromyalgia (and other illnesses), the answer is plenty. Like it or not, we are being conditioned to accept what is being told to us via the media. For you folks with Fibromyalgia, you are constantly given the message that medications like Lyrica and Cymbalta are the answer to your Fibromyalgia problems.

You generally will see the commercial of the happy woman who told of how her fibro had interfered with her life, but after finding this wonder drug, she is now cured (they do not say cured, but the intimation is clear). This happy woman is working in her garden with a big smile on her face and appears to be living her life to the fullest. In very small print or in a fast speaking voice you’ll hear about the side effects. You only have to ask the pharmacist for the insert that comes with Lyrica and read the pages of side effects and I guarantee that the shock would cause your fibro to flare. In fact many of the side effects are symptoms of the fibro that you are trying to get rid of.

Now to be fair, Lyrica might be of some help a minority of people, but it certainly does not do what is depicted by the advertising. And remember that Lyrica, for Pfizer (the Pharmaceutical company that makes it), earns billions a year. Lastly the withdrawal off this medication is a nightmare; just ask someone who tried to stop “cold turkey”. Are you aware of this, has your doctor told you this? Don’t blame the Doctor, though, as chances are that he/she are just as unaware as you are.

You are also told, again and again that there is no cure for Fibromyalgia, and you’re led to the false hope that perhaps the cure is just around the corner. This is not good news for the sufferers who are living with is horrendous illness and sees no end in sight.

I know how deep and penetrating the propaganda is. It is common knowledge that I run a fibromyalgia center and that my patients are 80 to 100% fibro free in 8 weeks and sometimes up to 12 weeks. Yet I have people write me and call me stating that I’m a crook, a fraud and every other insulting name in the book. My Fibro-Free patients are told again and again that they never had Fibromyalgia in the first place. Of course they would disagree with these statements.

Dr. Stanislaw R Burzynski has been successfully treating and curing the worst forms of cancer for decades, I know this to be true as I’ve had terminally ill patients go to his clinic in Texas and 15, 20 or more years later, they are still fine and thriving and cancer free. Yet, have you ever heard this name?

Have we really gotten to the point where we believe everything that is fed to us via the media? Are we losing the ability to think for ourselves, to make decisions based on facts? I’d say yes, and it is causing us our health and our quality of life.

When I studied mathematical statistics at the university, the professor told us during the first class that statistics lie and are often manipulated. When you see an advertisement that says that a particular product will do something 40% better, or this item is on sale for 50% off, what does that mean? It really has no meaning.

At this point, you might have realized that I’m writing this blog out of anger, which is true. I sick to death of seeing people with Fibromyalgia suffer, I’m sick of all the propaganda being fed to increase the bottom line of some huge corporation and I’m perhaps angriest that I have the ability to dramatically help so many with Fibromyalgia, but I cannot. After all, you’ve been told again and again that there is no solution.

For those who cannot get to my office, there are so many things you can do to really make yourselves feel better. I constantly write about them all the time. For example, the poisons in our foods lead to flares, yet you are bombarded with advertisements for them. When the word finally reaches the public i.e. MSG or High fructose corn syrup, the answer is to change the name, so you think you’ve eliminated it from your diet. Get rid of these two chemicals to start, and you’d feel a bit better, but that’s impossible as the names change and they are intentionally made difficult to find on labels.

I’ve seen medicinal marijuana dramatically help people with their pain, but it illegal in most states, yet OxyContin, which is at least as addictive as Heroin and perhaps more so is the second most abused drug in the United States and is killing our young at an alarming rate.

If you believe that you’ll eventually see the cure, than I hesitantly have to tell you that you are fooling yourselves. It will not happen medically, there will not be a magic pill produced that will make it all go away and many of you will continue to pour money into the various organizations in the hope that the cure will be found.

In the 1970’s Richard Nixon, one of our more controversial presidents claimed that he was confident that cancer would be cured by the end of the decade. Well, its 30 years later and it still has not been cured. Sure there have been some strides made, but the sad fact is that on a percentage basis, Breast, Colon, Prostate, Lung, Ovarian, Liver and all the worst cancers kill more now, than 30 years ago, the rates of death are not dropping but increasing.

Do you want some changes, turn off the Television, or better yet, get rid of the television, start making noise, yell at your doctors, your insurance companies, your politicians and the pharmaceutical companies. Demand that they start being honest. Demand that they stop only thinking of what is in it for themselves. In other words, if you want change, you’ll have to do it yourselves.

In the meantime, more and more people will suffer with the horrendous symptoms that make Fibromyalgia such a nightmare. In the next blog, I will write in detail about MSG!

  1. I have just recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I have from moderate to severe pain in most parts of my body, been tested for a lot of things and all came back ok. I have had a lot of stomach pain, the doctors have told me that this could have been brought on from my car wreck two and half years ago, that had crushed my leg. I am now taking cymbalta for depression and fibromyalgia. They tell me exercise but I hurt so bad I don’t want to do anything. I have to make myself get out of bed.

    • Why don’t you e-mail me some more info at fibro@drgenhemartin.com.

My fibro patients are 80 to 100% fibro free after 8 weeks, and on occasion a few weeks more, but the majority is 8 weeks. I have yet to have a patient have their symptoms return. After the 8 weeks, they continue to improve day by day until they reach 95 to 100%, this usually taking 4 to 60 months, sometimes more sometimes less.
      Again e-mail is fibro@drgenemartin.com or
