What is really Lyrica?

Lyrica (Pregabalin). Produced by Pfizer, it is an anti-seizure medication that might have some use in chronic pain i.e. fibro. It has a low rate of abuse but can be very addictive (as I’ve seen from so many patients weaning off it)

Lyrica is one of four drugs which  Pfizer in 2009 pleaded guilty to misbranding “with the intent to defraud or mislead”. Pfizer agreed to pay $2.3 billion  in settlement, and entered a corporate integrity agreement. Pfizer illegally promoted the drugs and caused false claims to be submitted to government healthcare programs for uses that were not medically accepted.

The med was originally developed in 2004 as a treatment for epilepsy and diabetic neuropathy. It might have some use as an anti-anxiety med.

Side effects include: dizziness, drowsiness blurred vision, increased appetite,  confusion, extremely vividdreams changes in libido (increase or decease), irritability, attention changes, abnormal coordination, memory impairment, tremors, numbness, vertigo, dry mouth and constipation, vomiting and flatulence, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, peripheral, swelling drunkenness, abnormal walking, weight gain.

You must most definitely have your blood and urine checked on a regular basis. sometimes you will need to remind the doctor to order these tests.

Pfizer’s patent will expire in 2013 and other companies will probably produce it, which will lower the price.
